Sherlock, the British series based on the iconic Arthur Conan Doyle character is one of the most exciting adaptations of Sherlock Holmes to hit the screen in… well in forever. It’s not just me saying this, critics and fans are raving about this show. The second season is airing now and will hopefully hit netflix soon. The first season was only a measly three episodes and unfortunately the second season is too. What’s so great about the show? Here are the top ten reasons that Sherlock rocks and you should be watching it.
Set in Modern Day
What I thought would be the bane of the show turns out to be one of its strengths. Sherlock is set in modern day London. The modern setting opens up a plethora of new technologies and contemporary elements for our present day Sherlock to interact with and utilize.
Respects the Original
Sherlock Holmes insiders will enjoy the show on a higher level as they pick up on the references to the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories. Much of the material is faithful to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes; it’s just set in the present day.
Benedict Cumberbatch
Not only is his name fun to say, he can act! He is a younger Sherlock than we are used to seeing but this is perfect since we are witnessing the early part of Sherlock’s crime solving career and the beginnings of his relationship with Watson. And Cumberbatch‘s portrayal of Holmes as a cold, sociopathic, genius detective is spot on.
Watson
Watson is so much more interesting than some of the depictions we’ve seen prior. I like that he’s an Afghanistan war vet, an element of his past that is pertinent to his character and key to certain plot points. Martin “Bilbo” Freeman’s portrayal is subtle and effective.
Developing Relationship
Besides the clever deductions and crime solving fun, Watson and Holmes’ relationship is handled so well, it’s a vital part of the show’s success. We get to see them meet, become roommates, and become a bad ass crime solving team.
Humor
The comedic aspects of Sherlock are not forced. They are a natural part of Holmes and Watson’s relationship. And they are super funny.
Long Episodes
These shows are like little movies. 90 minutes long. You don’t see that in the US.
It’s a TV Series
A TV series is the perfect medium for this material. We get to see the characters and their relationships progress. Holmes, Watson, Mycroft, and Moriarty are all so interesting and it’s fun to learn more about them and watch them evolve.
Mycroft
Mark Gatiss plays Mycroft. He is the co-creator and one of the writers of the show. And his portrayal of Mycroft is fantastic. He has a certain foreboding quality that adds to the show’s tension. Although his physical appearance is much different than Doyle’s original, Gatiss is fun to watch and and makes a good Mycroft.
Annotations
The utilization of annotations and animated depictions of texts and internet searches takes us into the mind of Sherlock as he figures things out. This is in contrast to other depictions of Holmes, where he typically dumps his deductions on the audience at the end of a case. We get to go on a mental ride with Sherlock, great fun!
